Mitt Romney in 2011 GOP Primary Debate: Federal Disaster Relief For Tornado And Flood Victims Is ‘Immoral,’ ‘Makes No Sense At All’

Posted on October 28, 2012. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , , , , , |

Watch for yourself (h/t Think Progress).

KING: Governor Romney? You’ve been a chief executive of a state. I was just in Joplin, Missouri. I’ve been in Mississippi and Louisiana and Tennessee and other communities dealing with whether it’s the tornadoes, the flooding, and worse. FEMA is about to run out of money, and there are some people who say do it on a case-by-case basis and some people who say, you know, maybe we’re learning a lesson here that the states should take on more of this role. How do you deal with something like that?

ROMNEY: Absolutely. Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that’s the right direction. And if you can go even further and send it back to the private sector, that’s even better.

Instead of thinking in the federal budget, what we should cut — we should ask ourselves the opposite question. What should we keep? We should take all of what we’re doing at the federal level and say, what are the things we’re doing that we don’t have to do? And those things we’ve got to stop doing, because we’re borrowing $1.6 trillion more this year than we’re taking in. We cannot…

    KING: Including disaster relief, though?

ROMNEY: We cannot — we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we’ll all be dead and gone before it’s paid off. It makes no sense at all.

(UPDATED) MA Senator Scott Brown, Staffers Race Bait Opponent Elizabeth Warren and Supporters

Posted on September 26, 2012. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , |

UPDATE: Cherokee Nation Chief Bill John Baker has now demanded an apology from the senator. From NPR:

Now, Brown and the GOP are under fire for supporters’ actions that “goes far beyond what is appropriate and proper in political discourse,” Cherokee Chief Bill John Baker said in a statement Wednesday.

“The use of stereotypical ‘war whoop chants’ and ‘tomahawk chops’ are offensive and downright racist,” he said. “It is those types of actions that perpetuate negative stereotypes and continue to minimize and degrade all native peoples.”

This is ugly.

“9/22/2012, nearby Eire Pub in Boston, at a rally for Scott Brown including former Mayor Ray Flynn. Some supporters of Elizabeth Warren were also gathered around with signs. Here you can see Brown’s staffers making “war whoops” and “tomahawk chops”, presumably in reference to Warren’s Cherokee heritage. Identified in video making the chop are Brown’s Constituent Service Counsel Jack Richard (camoflage shirt) and — we believe — Massachusetts GOP operative Brad Garrett, front and center with tan baseball cap and gray hoodie, leading the whoops and chops.”

For his own part, Senator Brown has disavowed the video that he admits he has not actually seen. But it’s one thing to say one doesn’t condone this sort of behavior by supporters- and yet not apologize for it:

“The apologies that need to be made and the offensiveness here is the fact that professor Warren took advantage of a claim, to be somebody — a Native American — and using that for an advantage, a tactical advantage.”

And it is still yet another thing, when one has just said this in a debate:

Brown devoted his opening remarks to accuse Warren, a Harvard Law School professor who says she is part Cherokee Indian, of using her background to give her an advantage when competing for jobs throughout her career.

“The professor said she is a Native American, a person of color, and you can see she’s not,” Brown said.

As I said, this is ugly. Think “Jesse Helms” ugly. Salon’s Joan Walsh:

There are so many things wrong with Brown’s take on Warren’s heritage it’s hard to know where to start. For one thing, “as you can see” isn’t the way we classify people racially. Given our nation’s history of racial mixing, it’s a dangerous and insensitive place to go. It showed Brown up as cosseted in his own white world, unaware of the complexities of diversity – that people can wind up looking like one ethnicity when they are actually from another.

Most important, it showed Brown is willing to play on the anxieties of white men that women and minorities are using affirmative action to take jobs they should have. He came right out and said we don’t know “whether she got ahead as a result of checking that box.” It was astonishing. Watching the debate at the time, I tweeted, “I cannot believe Scott Brown talked about Warren’s racial background so stridently. It’s like the old ‘white hands’ ad.”

That Scott Brown, who won the late Senator Ted Kennedy’s seat in a special election, is now using a similar tactic to this Helms ad- that in part slams Teddy’s affirmative action work– is doubly disgraceful.

(VIDEO) Maine Ron Paul Supporting Delegates’ Interviews, Post RNC 2012 Walk-Out

Posted on August 29, 2012. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

Pete Harring: “I was jammed- I was duly elected as a delegate by the State of Maine, by a thousand of my fellow Republicans, who knew exactly who I was going to vote for.”

(Interruption, as loud chants of “Mitt Romney!” and “Ron Paul” drown Harring out; rude behavior by one unnamed Romeny supporter, who pointed to his back to emphasize his point)

Harring continued: “It’s time that the American people understand that we’re all being screwed here. If it can happen to me, if it can happen to me, it can happen to anybody and everybody.”

There were interviews with other Maine delegates; one statement jumps out: “I am going to focus my efforts on electing Republicans on the state and local level.” When asked about working on the presidential race, the answer was, “No. That is not going to be my priority.”

2012 GOP Convention Delayed by TS Isaac; Party “Working with Fed Agencies, State” Employees to Ensure Safety of Attendees

Posted on August 25, 2012. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , , , |

No sense of irony in the GOP!! Some days you can’t make this stuff up… So much for “the party of small government”!

The GOP 2012 convention, originally planned for Monday, is now scheduled to convene on Monday, but adjourn immediately until Tuesday.

Tropical Storm Isaac located about 135 miles south-southwest of of Port au Prince, Haiti with maximum sustained winds at 60 mph. The system continues moving northwestward at 14 mph. A Hurricane Watch is in effect for Haiti, while a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Hispaniola and the northern Caribbean Islands. Heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected to develop across the Caribbean Islands as this system continues moving northwestward and into the eastern Gulf of Mexico over the weekend.”

So now what was supposed to be a four-day event will be condensed into three, leaving organizers to juggle the logistics and pack as many speakers and other party business, including the formal nomination of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.

RNC Chair Reince Priebus:

“Our first priority is ensuring the safety of delegates, alternates, guests, members of the media attending the Republican National Convention and citizens of the Tampa Bay area,” Reince Priebus, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, said in a statement.

“R.N.C. convention officials and the Romney campaign are working closely with state, local and federal officials, as well as the Secret Service, to monitor Tropical Storm Isaac and preserve Florida’s emergency management resources. Officials have predicted participants may encounter severe transportation difficulties due to sustained wind and rain.”

Statement of RNC President and CEO Bill Harris echoed that of Priebus:

“Our chief priority is the safety of the residents of Florida, of those visiting the Convention, and all those in Gulf Coast states who may be impacted by Tropical Storm Isaac. We have been working closely with the campaign, the party, and state and local officials for months to ensure a successful, enjoyable convention. Federal, state and local officials assure us that they are prepared to respond, if needed, and the scheduling changes we are announcing today will help ensure the continued safety of all participants – our foremost concern. We are also committed to keeping the delegates and guests of the convention well informed about the situation, and we will continue providing updates in the hours and days ahead.”

More via CNN, with Gov. Rick Scott giving us the trifecta:

GOP officials expect 50,000 people to attend the convention where Mitt Romney will officially accept his party’s presidential nomination and make the final turn to the November election.

Before the RNC announcement, Florida’s Republican Governor Rick Scott announced that he was cancelling his activities at the convention but would remain in Tampa to monitor and coordinate the state’s response to the storm. “I declared a state of emergency for the state of Florida,” Scott told reporters Saturday morning. “That’s standard protocol to make sure we can coordinate our efforts with federal, state, and local so we can have the proper response.”

There is a remarkable irony in a national party, the governor of the host state and a presidential candidate that all together look down upon the federal government as a whole, as well as state employees and their unions, now working with those same people, when there is a potentially life-threatening disaster looming.

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) May Claim He’s “Never Heard of Children Getting Pregnant From Rape”- But I Have

Posted on August 22, 2012. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , , , , , , , , |

Revolting. For context, King made his remarks in an attempt to defend House colleague Todd Akin (R-MO), who King insists is the “target of petty, personal attacks”.

REPORTER: “You support the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act that would provide federal funding for abortions to a person that has been forcefully raped. But what if someone isn’t forcibly raped and for example, a 12-year-old who gets pregnant? Should she have to bring this baby to term?”

KING: Well I just haven’t heard of that being a circumstance that’s been brought to me in any personal way and I’d be open to hearing discussion about that subject matter. Generally speaking it’s this: that there millions of abortions in this country every year. Millions of them are paid for at least in part by taxpayers. I think it’s immoral for us to compel conscientious objecting taxpayers to fund abortion through the federal government, or any other government for that matter. So that’s my stand. And if there are exceptions there, then bring me those exceptions let’s talk about it. In the meantime it’s wrong for us to compel pro-life people to pay taxes to fund abortion.”

(VIDEO link) From the accompanying article:

“Of course, Steve King isn’t telling the real truth. In reality, rape impregnates thousands of women every year, including little girls. King is also wrong to claim that the federal government funds abortion. The federal government is barred from funding abortion because of the Hyde Amendment. The only exceptions to that law are women and girls who become pregnant by rape or incest, which is acceptable and understandable to most human beings. But because King hasn’t personally known any instance of little girls being raped and impregnated, he doesn’t want there to be any circumstance where abortion should be allowed.”

For those unaware, in a previous career I was a medical laboratory technician. In that capacity, I worked numerous jobs around the country over the course of about a dozen years before retiring from the field. Routinely I would perform blood and urine pregnancy testing- and one day that haunts and horrifies me still was the day that a urine sample for pregnancy testing from a ten year old girl came into the lab.

The results, which were double-checked for verification, were positive.

Ten. Years. Old.

Now, prepare to wrap your head fully around this.

First off, there was a girl whose body had matured sufficiently for her body to begin menstrual cycles at a rather precocious age- the average age of menarche is considered to be 13 years worldwide, 12.5 years in the United States. Additionally, not all females who are ovulating have had a menstrual cycle, contrary to popular belief.

Second, this child was impregnated.

Impregnated.

Ten. Years. Old.

A child is a child, and rape is rape. There is NO WAY AND NO POSSIBLE VALID ARGUMENT HERE THAT THIS WAS A CONSENSUAL ACT. Consent would require knowledge and comprehension far beyond what this girl was capable of. Additionally, the legal age of consent in the United States ranges from 16 to 18 years old.

This conception and pregnancy were indeed the result of rape. This child was raped. And even typing that is difficult.

Widen the scope a bit and you can see part of the problem in getting a grasp of the problem. Due to the nature of the crime, the court system, the ages of the victims, and so many other elements, it is impossible to know exactly how many female children are raped in our country, let alone how many conceive.

But, back to the ten year old girl.

A third point to consider is the physician attending this girl had reason to order the testing– this is not the sort of examination nor laboratory results most pediatricians seek without some sort of examination of the patient and medical interview (as best as can be conducted under such circumstances). The testing itself was not ordered in the ER as a “STAT” (highest priority) or even “ASAP”, but as a routine test request coming directly from the physician’s office, with no criminal rape kit– had that been the case, our hospital laboratory would not have been involved, but rather the state’s criminal laboratory. Later on, when the results were given back to the office, this child and parent/ guardian were informed of the girl’s pregnancy.

Let’s stop again.

In addition to being a 12th generation native Mainer, I am also an amateur genealogist, having been working on my families’ lines (and those of others around the country) as a kid with my grandparents and mother. Over the course of 40 plus years of doing that sort of research, I have walked through literally hundreds, if not thousands, of cemeteries.

I have no idea how many times I have seen graves of children who died the day they were born or those of young mothers who died in childbirth. One of my ancestors, Susan (Fogarty) Billings (1795-1836), died giving birth to her youngest child Elizabeth- my great-great-great-grandmother. Sometimes gravestones reflected the deaths on the same day of both mother and child, telling sad tales of family tragedies from long ago.

( Image: Teenage birth rate per 1,000 women aged 15–19, 2000–2009)

“But that was back years ago, before medical advances and cleaner environments!” some could argue. And to a degree they would be right, that conditions have improved markedly since the 1830s.

But consider this: In the past decade, the rate of women dying in childbirth in the United States has risen to alarming levels. It is a serious problem that is getting worse every year. In poor nations, teen pregnancy is a leading cause of death. The United States has the highest rates of teen pregnancy of developed nations.

Among the risks for teen mothers that can lead maternal and infant death are lack of access to proper nutrition, adequate prenatal care from trained professionals- and with younger teens, an underdeveloped pelvis can lead to difficulties.

But we’re not talking about a “young teen”- we are talking about a TEN. YEAR. OLD. GIRL.

So keep believing there is no “Republican War on Women”– to a degree, you would be right.

Today, Rep. Steve King of Iowa declared war- on raped children.

Romney, Others Call for Todd Akin to “Throw in the Towel”; Quit Missouri Senate Race- Akin refusing to Budge

Posted on August 21, 2012. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , , |

When Mitt Romney says, ‎”Today, his fellow Missourians urged him to step aside, and I think he should accept their counsel and exit the Senate race”, you KNOW he’s really saying, DUDE! I can’t get rid of your stench; get downwind already!!”

The chorus has been quite loud today:

“We do not believe it serves the national interest for Congressman Todd Akin to stay in this race,” said the statement by Sen. Roy Blunt and former senators Danforth, Bond, John Ashcroft and Jim Talent. “The issues at stake are too big, and this election is simply too important. The right decision is to step aside.”

But try as they might, no one is getting Rep. Todd Akin to budge.

“I’m in this race for the long haul and we’re going to win it,” Akin told conservative radio host Dana Loesch. Akin complained his detractors overreacted to a liberal media campaign to take him down. He said fellow Republicans “ran for cover at the first sound of gunfire.”

House GOP Refuses to Allow Dem Whip to Speak on Floor & Offer Senate Compromise

Posted on December 21, 2011. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , |

This morning, Speaker Pro Tempore Michael Fitzpatrick (R-PA), under orders from Speaker Boehner, refused to allow Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer to speak on the floor and ask for unanimous consent to bring up the Senate bipartisan compromise to extend the payroll tax cut. Whip Hoyer and Congressman Chris Van Hollen are continuing to try to offer the Senate compromise even though Republicans walked off the floor. Once again, Republicans are risking a tax increase on 160 million Americans and the loss unemployment benefits for those who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own.
