Yes on 1 Campaign Launches Major Volunteer Push

PORTLAND – Hundreds of volunteers will help Mainers United for Marriage have 6,000 one-on-one conversations with Maine voters during a Weekend of Action on Saturday and Sunday.

During the Weekend of Action, volunteers will talk to their families, friends and neighbors about why marriage matters to all loving, committed couples and why it’s important to vote “Yes” on Question 1 in November.

“Our campaign has already had more than 165,000 personal conversations with Mainers about the freedom to marry. We hope to add another 6,000 conversations this weekend,” said Matt McTighe, campaign manager for Mainers United for Marriage. “While polls show that support for the freedom to marry has never been higher, we know that talking about marriage is the best way to change hearts and minds. This weekend, we’re making a statewide push to talk to thousands of people.”

Campaign activities are planned around the state, including in: Augusta, Brewer, Ellsworth, Farmington, Lewiston, Milbridge, Newcastle, Orono, Portland, Presque Isle, Rockland and Waldoboro.

In addition, Mainers United coalition partners, the Religious Coalition Against Discrimination and Catholics for Marriage Equality are holding a Sabbath Weekend. More than 75 congregations will participate in activities to the discuss diverse religious traditions that support the freedom to marry.

“People of faith in every tradition highly value marriage and also want to strengthen all Maine families, including same-sex couples and their families,” said Rev. Marvin Ellison, president of the RCAD Board. “Our faith and values give us strong reason to support the freedom to marry for same-sex couples.”

Mainers United for Marriage is the coalition to win marriage for all Maine families. A “Yes” vote on Question 1 in November will allow marriage licenses for loving, committed same-sex couples in Maine while also protecting religious freedom.
