Penny Plourde Announces Run for SD 24 (Augusta, China, Oakland, Sidney and Vassalboro)
From her press release:
Penny Plourde, a retired state worker who served as a director in the departments of Transportation and Labor and has been honored as a longtime advocate for Small Businesses and people with disabilities, announced her candidacy today for the State Senate in District 24, which includes Augusta, China, Oakland, Sidney and Vassalboro. Plourde, a Democrat, is a resident of Vassalboro.
Plourde is a life-long Maine resident and has lived in the Augusta area since 1979. She was employed by Maine State Government for 32 years as the Director of Civil Rights and Small Business Development, in the Department of Transportation and was appointed in 2006 by Governor Baldacci as Director of Vocational Rehabilitation within the Department of Labor. Plourde, who has dedicated her professional and personal life to empowering Maine people, believes her past experience, understanding of state government and community involvement will be the keys to her success in the fall campaign.
“I’m running because I want to give opportunity and hope back to the people of Maine. I want Maine to be a state that values quality jobs, education, affordable health care, and provide opportunities to every Mainer,” said Plourde. “I want to put Maine government back on the side of working families, and I have the professional and life experiences to ensure that our state remains a great place to live and work.”
In addition to serving 3 years on The US Small Business Administration’s, Maine Division Advisory Council, Plourde notes that she grew up in a family-owned small business so she understands the challenges that many businesses face. “My number one goal will be to listen to the people in District 24, and help develop strategies to create and maintain quality local jobs.”
Plourde also knows first hand how to challenge adversity. Born with spina bifida, Plourde uses a wheelchair but has never let that fact define who she is. In fact, Plourde finds her disability has empowered her decades of distinguished work in disability awareness, transportation policy and advocacy.
In 2001, Plourde won the “BULL DOG” award from the Federal Highway Region, which sums up how she sees life. “When I see injustice, I will work tirelessly to make it right no matter how long it takes and I look forward to doing that for my constituents. I have never seen or used my disability as a crutch but rather have used it as a way to better understand the varying needs and concerns of people.”
Now retired, Plourde is able to dedicate 100% of her time to the needs of her constituents, and her passion, drive and take-charge attitude will make her a force in the Senate. “I am a hard proven worker, and I am prepared to represent the interests of Augusta, China, Oakland, Sidney and Vassalboro without hesitation every single day. This area needs a strong voice in the Senate and I will be that voice.”
